Thirty-six years ago, as a young graduate student, I drew and painted these images on location in New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens). No one had done a location series like this before, and no one could do it now, as most of the stations and other locales depicted have been irrevocably altered. Consider this series a tribute to the inimitable New York of the 1980s and before -- vast, mysterious, deep, dark, unknowable, gritty, real -- and existing now only in literature, film, art, music, and memory. |
